The Wheel Of Life

My #1 Tool for helping clients during the start of a relationship.

I like to use this tool, if the client is UNSURE about ‘where to start’.

When this happens, it’s show time for me to bring up the wheel of life, and draw it out like it is presented to you on this page. I use Remarkable, a paper drawing, paperless digital, no notification physical tool I can link to zoom and present a kick ass session.

The wheel of life is here;

Use Case

Let’s put this into test, for you, please draw a circle in the middle of a page, and you can use the same template as above, or what I like to do instead is, draw 3 lines, creating 6 pizza slices. Once this is done, mentally notes, or physically by drawing the 0 in the middle, and 10 on the outside. So, 0 is the worst, the absolute worst, bottom of the pit, a standard you can barely conceive simple because it’s too horrible to bear imagining it. 10 is a magically place, it’s the best of course, it’s the royal flush, it’s the blackjack 21, it’s the hole in one, it’s the fine sunset, the break taking hike with sunrise, it’s the 5 star exceeding expectations hotel… Got it? Haha…

Now, write out these area’s outside of your 6 slices, 1 slice represents 1 area.

These slices represent an area of your life, these are the area’s I like to use with my clients.

1. Relationships (Family, Partner, Friends)

2. Finances (Current, Business, Plan)

3. Leisure (Free Time, Hobbies)

4. Future (Thoughts of Future)

5. Health (Physical and Mental)

6. Career (Work Life)

Other area’s, which can happily be added if you like,

- Education

- Personal Development

- Family

- Friends

- Love

- Spiritual

- Business

- Home Environment

Now, once you have your circle created, you must now score yourself. And, let’s start, I will walk with you threw this process.

It’s pretty simple, the first number that comes to mind when you think of you ‘Finances’ as a whole, you draw a curved line on your slice, as if you were to create a new circle inside, join each side of the slice together.

What do you rate yourself in the area of your Relationships?

What do you rate yourself in the area of your Leisure?

What do you rate yourself in the area of your Future?

What do you rate yourself in the area of your Health?

What do you rate yourself in the area of your Career?

Quick fire… Join, join, join. Go go go, don’t need to spend more than 3-5 seconds on each area.

It is very clear that you can choose and add more topics to your own life. I use these areas for these reasons, 1. I use it to make life simpler, I even now think, and may say, know that having 6 area’s of life is too overwhelming when setting goals, the more area’s the more hassle I believe. Having 6 goals can be stressful, having 8, even more. I like to create inspiring, fun goals. 6 is enough! Haha! 2. These area’s encompass practically all of life’s events. You could actually make the list smaller, for example, career could be linked into finance, future in there too, along with leisure… Haha, but it gets complicated when you have to link so many area’s. 3. It’s a great use of the tool chunking, to recap, having more than 3 goals is incredible, while having to little clarity is harmful. I like 6, and maybe this can be my 4th point, I like it… 6 area’s brings 3 goals, see next chapter to start creating those goals.

FYI; Does your circle look smooth? Let’s say we took that wheel from the garage and put it on your own car, how would your car run? I mean honestly, if we took your wheel, put it on my car, and we got in, how would we do at 60 mph? Haha! It’s a fun mental exercise, I am pre writing what I know to be true, the likely hood of your wheel being very smooth and round is very unlikely, I have never had anyone have a round circle, only if they’ve done it multiple times, and I personally think that is from bias reasons, they know what happens, therefore preplan the outcome to seem better than it is. And that includes me too.

What if we ran the car at 10 mph, would it go ok at that speed? Ha. No. The point of this is, something is lagging, what area has had a bad score, and one you feel you could improve? If one is bad, and you don’t have much rush to improve it, don’t worry about it, go for the area you want to improve, that’s most pressing and important is also a useful one to go for.

In the next area, I will help you use your circle and start to get actions for your new targeted score.

Process of Goal Setting From The Wheel of Life

Ok, this part will be useless unless you have draw the circle, and scored yourself is going to be pointless. Do it if you have not.

It’s time to have some really good helpful questions,

Firstly, which area is the lowest? Then, why isn’t that a 2?

Secondly, why isn’t that area a 8?

Now, with some gratitude for not being a 2, you’re welcome, and some realisations of why you’re not a 8, which may, and I believe definitely gave you some starting actions you could do to improve that area.

Example;

If the area is 5 in finances. We say it’s not a 2 because, I live in x country, and (true story) I don’t live in a house which is constantly flooded, literally flooded with water all the time, I do have a house which has a shower that I can use with clean water, and I can afford food when I’m out. It’s not a 8 because I don’t have an emergency fund, or savings for the future, I also don’t invest, I am far away from what I expected to be…

Cool, first step done, and I only do 1/2 area’s with a client, because again, 6 area’s is a lot for one session, one hour… Choose 2 area’s.

Let’s move to the action process.

Next comes more intriguing questions, but more exact, more focused, and more demanding answers from the questions.

Q1. What are you doing that makes you a 5? (Are doing, not, not doing) Kinda clear based off knowing what you are not doing. Although this question has a lot of branches, and possible followup questions but in essence, not only what you are ‘not’ doing, but also the things you ‘are’ doing.

Q2. What can you do to become an 8? Now is a perfect time to reflect back to the answered question of why am I not an 8? This works for all area’s, you may need more time to get more specific answers with different area’s for example, for family, or relationships, becoming more specific would look like, spend more time with x, plan y more often.

Right we’re now set to write some actions for ourselves.

Let’s look at the finance aspect, and then the area of relationships as examples.

An 8 in finances does;

Have an Emergency Fund

Has Savings

Invests

Cool… —> Now, we look at these, ask the client or self to say, what can you do, today or this next week until our session to move towards that 8?

They say x, I say y… Both works, ultimately, I may suggest doing z, or they come up with their own answers, although it will be a mutual agreement for what happens, all we do know is, we want to get to 8… For you, and anyone, I suggest getting an emergency fund of $1,000… Then getting out of debt… Then saving/investing.

Let’s look at the relationship aspect,

A 8 in relationships does;

Takes care of themselves to then take care x

Spends more time with y

Plans to do z more

Interesting one with relationships, because, take care of yourself means what? Exactly, many things, exercise to have energy, good sleep, and this can be a goal for the week if that’s where the conversation goes. Or it can be a life goal, get to x weight, or use sleep cycle to track sleep, or to buy new sleep equipment. There is many avenues a conversation can go, my purpose is always to bring the end product or their goal to something they are happy with, something they feel compelled to do.

Wrap Up

What a blog, right? Did you use it? That’s an important question, maybe not. BUT, I know for sure, you have scanned this blog and you have found a action you can take in a certain part of your life, and that one action, you can do, not only can you do it, you will gain benefit from was that thought, that whisper you got, it was that small still voice we call it…

That one whisper of action is exactly why I love the wheel of life, every time, and I mean every time you look at this you will find an action that you can take in a certain area of your life.

Next time your ‘lost’ go back to basic’s, it’s a corny sentence, but is always true, if you’re out of working out, go for a walk, do 1 push, if you’re losing in your finances, start a new budget, save $10, invest $10, back to basics.

The wheel of life is a basic tool to me, it’s a corner stone of my coaching, and if I feel necessary, I will always use it. Who would I be, without inviting you to join my coaching, follow up with me if you like the idea of coaching.
